Born in South Korea, Gulrim Choï studied baroque cello in Paris with David Simpson, then in Brussels and Milan, before graduating with a Master’s degree with Christophe Coin in Basel, where she also delved deeper into improvised music with Fred Frith. In 2011 she was appointed principal cellist of the EUBO (European Union Baroque Orchestra). Since 2012 she is the principal cellist of Ensemble Diderot with whom she focuses on forgotten repertoires as well as the great masterpieces of trio sonatas. The Ensemble has been awarded international prizes on a regular basis, including the Diapason d’Or, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Gramophone Editor’s Choice, International Classical Music Award (ICMA), BBC Music Magazine choice... They will make their debut at the Berlin Philharmonie in the fall of 2024. 

Gulrim has also performed throughout Europe with Les Ambassadeurs, Pygmalion, Concerto Copenhagen, Holland Baroque, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Dunedin Consort, Marsyas... With these groups she participated in over forty recordings. Her curiosity naturally led her to the viola da gamba as well as orchestral conducting. 

Gulrim has participated to the collective creation of the play Sans tambour, touring intensively across France and abroad since 2021 (Avignon, Spoleto, Paris, Madrid...). She also takes part in musical performances such as Disparitions and Apparitions with Antonin-Tri Hoang (Festival d'Automne, Berlin Jazzfest), or the very eclectic orchestra La Sourde.

Her first solo recording was acclaimed by the critics (Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, Diapason, Classica...). She plays a cello by J. Simpson (London, mid-eighteenth century). ​
